Started in 1947 as Distributive Education Clubs of America, DECA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization made for high school and college students to learn about entrepreneurship and business. Every year, DECA hosts events for the 297,000 students part of its organization, including the Ultimate DECA Power trip in Washington D.C., as well as various camps throughout the state level. Every year, they also host the International Career Development Conference, which includes students from the United States and all around the world from countries like China, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Germany (+ more!). With opportunities like the Honor Award and DECA Glass, it provides opportunities for students to learn about the business world, gain leadership opportunities in the chapter or state level, as well as network with peers and professionals.
*I know some people want to know the difference between FBLA and DECA, so let me clear it up...FBLA can be more generalized in its events and offers plenty of guest speakers. It helps you build skills such as web design, economics, and other related business knowledge. DECA is more hands-on and personalized to your interests, offers more prestigious awards + travel opportunities, and is 10x funner IMO ;)
(but hey, no one said you couldn't do both!!)
Q: How many events are there? How do I know which one to choose?
A: There are over 60 different events you can do, and it's okay if you feel overwhelmed! There are free quizzes online for DECA events that can help you limit down your likes and interests. You can also review the events and clusters you like in your free time so you can get a general idea of what you want to do. The cluster information in the First-Year DECA section also has information that might help you better choose!
Q: How many events can I do?
A: Each person must do TWO events. Third events can only be done if they're virtual.
Q: Can both of my events be in the same cluster?
A: Yes, they can!
Q: I need help on my event. Who can I ask help from?
A: We recommend you first review the guidelines for your event. If you cannot find your answer there, then you can contact any of the board members through Remind / email or ask Mr. Mathew!
Q: When do I get started on my event?
A: Depends on the event. If you want to do a written, its best to prepare at least 3-4 months in advance. If you want to do a principles or another role-play, practicing 2-3 months before the competition will greatly help!
Q: When is the deadline for my event?
A: All deadlines for event submissions will be placed in the calendar on the Home page of this website.
Q: How many team members can I have?
A: Principle events are 1 member only, but many other projects are 1-3 people. You may not have more than 3 people in these groups.
Q: Do I need to make a REAL business?? :O
A: Depends on the event. If you're doing Community Giving / Awareness (BMA) or Business Growth Plan (Entrepreneurship) then there is a good chance you need to actually make the business or event with real consumers and data. Otherwise, for most of the other events you may only have to research an existing company or can make a hypothetical one! Please make sure to check the guidelines of your event first.
